Read the beginning

On a sunny summer afternoon, your child was bouncing on their toes in the kitchen. "Is it time yet? Is it time?"

their mom laughed. "Almost! Help me wrap up this bread and cheese."

Your child carefully tucked a small loaf of bread and a block of cheese into their picnic basket. The whole neighborhood was coming to the park today, and your child could hardly wait.

The park was beautiful — warm grass, picnic tables under a big old tree, and sunlight everywhere. But as the neighbors arrived, something felt wrong. Mr. Tomás set down a small bag with just a few carrots. Auntie Rose had only a handful of herbs. Then Lily and Max, the shy twins from down the street, walked up clutching two small potatoes.

Everyone looked at the tables. Not much food at all.

"This doesn't look like much of a feast," Mr. Tomás said quietly.

Your child saw the disappointed faces. Auntie Rose sighed. Lily and Max stared at their shoes. Even their mom looked uncertain.

But then your child spotted something by the creek — a smooth, round stone, pale as the moon. they picked it up, and their eyes went wide.

"What if we make soup?" your child said. "STONE soup!"

"Stone soup?" Mr. Tomás raised an eyebrow.

"Mom, can we use the big community pot? Please?"

their mom smiled. "Let's do it."

They filled the big pot with water and set it over the safe little fire pit. Your child held up the stone for everyone to see, then — PLOP — dropped it right in!

The neighbors gathered around, curious. The pot bubbled. Your child stirred it with a big wooden spoon, leaned in, and sniffed dramatically.

"Hmm," they said, very seriously. "It's getting there. But it needs something."

"That's just water and a rock!" Lily giggled.

Your child looked at their own picnic basket. they picked up their cheese, broke off a piece, and dropped it into the pot. "There! I put my cheese in first."

Something changed. Mr. Tomás chuckled softly, pulled out his carrots, and tossed them in. "Well, if you're brave enough to share, so am I."

Your child stirred and sniffed again. "Stone soup is getting better!"

Auntie Rose stepped forward and sprinkled in her herbs. A wonderful smell floated up from the pot.

"Stone soup is getting better… and BETTER!"

Lily and Max looked at each other. They were still holding their potatoes tight. Your child smiled at them. "Those potatoes would be perfect. Want to drop them in together?"

The twins nodded. They stepped up side by side and let the potatoes tumble into the bubbling pot. PLOP. PLOP.

"You did it!" your child cheered, and Lily and Max stood up a little taller.

"Stone soup is getting better… and BETTER… and BETTER!"

Just then, Grandma Bea came walking up the path, a big smile on her face and a loaf of warm bread in her arms. "Am I too late?"
