Courage Against a Giant

Your child had never seen a giant before, but today, they were going to hear about one.

It started on a sunny hillside, where the grass swayed like a golden ocean and sheep wandered lazily between wildflowers. Your child sat with their back against a big terebinth tree, eyes half-closed, listening to David strum his little harp. The notes floated up into the sky like tiny birds.

"That cloud looks like a dancing sheep," your child said, pointing.

David laughed. "That one looks like a lion with a funny nose."

Everything felt peaceful and warm — until shouts broke through the quiet air.

"David! David!" They yelled.

Three figures came running up the hillside, armor clinking with every step. It was David's brothers. Their faces were serious, their eyes wide.

David jumped to his feet. "What's wrong?"

The tallest brother caught his breath. "There's trouble at the valley. A giant warrior named Goliath is challenging our whole army. He's taller than two men stacked on top of each other!"

"His voice shakes the ground," the second brother added, shaking his head.

"Everyone is afraid," said the third. "Even the bravest soldiers won't go near him. King Saul doesn't know what to do."

David's face grew serious. Your child watched his hands tighten around his harp. He looked so small next to his armored brothers.

David stood up straight and said, "I'll go fight him. God has always helped me, and He will help me now."

His brothers stared at him, surprised. "Are you sure?" the tallest brother asked. "I am." David replied.

Then they hurried off to report to King Saul, leaving David and your child alone on the hillside.

David sank back down onto the grass and stared at his hands.

"Goliath is so big, your child. I meant what I said though — I know God will help me. But I'm still a little scared."

Your child didn't rush to fix anything. they sat down beside him and put a gentle hand on his shoulder. For a while, they just watched the clouds drift by together.

Then your child said softly, "I get scared too, David. My stomach feels all tied in a knot right now. But I think we can be scared and brave at the same time — because God loves us, and He's right here with us."

David looked at them. "You really think so?"

"I know so," your child said.

David was quiet for a moment. Then he whispered, "When a lion came after my sheep, God helped me chase it away. And when a bear came, God helped me then, too."

Your child's eyes lit up. "See? God didn't leave you then. He won't leave you now."

Something shifted in David's face — a tiny spark of courage.

"Come on," your child said, standing up and brushing grass from their knees. "Let's go down to the river and find some stones for your slingshot."
