Read the beginning

your child had a secret folded up inside their backpack, and they were too scared to take it out.

It was an application — one single page — for the Junior Mars Explorer Program. All they had to do was hand it to Ms. Takahashi before the bell rang. But their hands wouldn't move.

Ms. Takahashi knelt beside their desk. "your child, I saw you reading about Mars again at lunch. Three books this month." She smiled. "You've got everything it takes. Be brave enough to try."

your child pulled the paper out, smoothed the wrinkles, and handed it over.

Six weeks later, your child stood at the launch site in a real space suit with their name stitched on the chest. they had been selected. *Actually selected.* their stomach was doing somersaults.

"Pretty wild, right?" said a girl next to them, bouncing on her toes. "I'm Zuri. I've wanted to go to Mars since I was four. Are you nervous? I'm nervous. But the good kind of nervous."

your child laughed. "The very good kind of nervous."

They climbed aboard *The Stardrifter* together. Captain Reyes, a tall woman with kind eyes and a calm voice, helped them buckle into their seats. "Ready, explorers?"

"Ready!" they said together.

The countdown began. Ten… nine… eight… your child gripped their armrests. Three… two… one…

The ship roared. your child felt the rumble deep in their bones, pressing them back into the seat like a giant invisible hand. Through the window, the ground dropped away — buildings became dots, then the coastline curved, then Earth itself became a blue marble wrapped in white clouds.

your child chose to grin instead of scream. they was really doing this.

During the flight, Captain Reyes floated over with a tablet full of pictures. "Mars is called the Red Planet because its soil is full of iron oxide — basically rust! And wait until you see Olympus Mons. It's the biggest volcano in the entire solar system, three times taller than Mount Everest."

"Will it erupt on us?" Zuri asked, eyes wide.

"It hasn't erupted in millions of years," Captain Reyes said with a wink. "Oh, and here's a fun one — a day on Mars is only about forty minutes longer than a day on Earth. So your bedtime barely changes."

your child and Zuri groaned, and Captain Reyes laughed.

When they finally landed, your child pressed their face to the window. Red dust stretched in every direction under a pink-orange sky. Two tiny moons hung above the horizon — Phobos and Deimos, like little potato-shaped lanterns.

The hatch opened. your child stepped out and felt their boot press into the soft red soil, leaving a perfect footprint. they stood very still. The whole planet was quiet, ancient, and enormous. they thought of Ms. Takahashi kneeling by their desk, and whispered, "Thank you."

In the full story, your child is the star: their name is woven throughout, read aloud in a warm, engaging voice. Preview it with your child's name.
