Read the beginning

The morning sun poured over Willow Meadow like warm honey, and your child had the most important job they had ever had. Tomorrow was the Big Race, and your child was busy getting ready.

Your child walked along the winding race path, checking every twist and turn. Past the sparkly pond, through the tall white daisies, and over the little wooden bridge to the finish line. Everything looked perfect.

Then they heard a whooshing sound. Speedy the Hare zipped past so fast the daisies bent sideways.

"I'm gonna win SO easily!" Speedy called out, zooming in a big circle. "Nobody's faster than me!"

Your child smiled. "Hey Speedy, would you like a coach to help you get ready?"

Speedy skidded to a stop. "Well, I guess I could always be even faster!"

"A good racer practices hard," your child said. "But a GREAT racer cheers for others too. Going fast is important but so is staying focused on the goal."

Speedy thought for a minute. Then he nodded. "Okay, Coach your child. I could use you on my team."

That's when your child noticed something move behind a big mossy rock. Two little eyes peeked out. It was Tango the Tortoise.

"Hi, Tango!" your child said softly. "Are you joining in on the big race tomorrow?"

Tango ducked her head. "I'm just going to be watching. I'm way too slow for a race."

Your child walked over and sat right down beside her. "Oh Tango." they smiled. "There is more to racing than just being the fastest. Would you like a coach too?"

Tango's eyes went wide. Her mouth opened, then closed, then opened again. "You'd do that? For me?"

"I think you'd be wonderful in this race," your child said. "Everyone goes at their own pace. And trying your best is what matters."

Tango blinked. A tiny smile spread across her face. "Okay," she whispered. "I'll try."

Race day! The meadow was full of butterflies and sunshine. Grandma Owl perched on a tall post near the finish line, her spectacles glinting.

"Welcome, everyone, to the Willow Meadow Big Race!" Grandma Owl hooted.

Your child knelt down between their two racers. "Just do your best. That's all anyone can do." they gave Speedy a pat on the shoulder and Tango a gentle tap on her shell.

"Ready… set… GO!" called Grandma Owl.

Speedy shot forward like a rocket. Tango took one small step. Then another. Then another.

Your child ran to the pond and cheered. "Looking great, Speedy! Keep it up, Tango — steady and strong!"

Speedy was already past the daisy field. Tango was still near the pond, but she kept going, one little step at a time.

Your child ran ahead to the wooden bridge. "You're doing amazing, both of you!"

Speedy was SO far ahead. He could see the finish line. He felt so good that he did a big silly spin right on the bridge. "Watch THIS!" he shouted.
