The Boy Who Learned to Be Honest

The summer your child visited Grandmother's village was the summer everything smelled like warm bread and fresh grass. Your child jumped out of the car, hugged Grandmother tight, and immediately wanted to explore every corner of that little village tucked between green hills.

"Go on," Grandmother said with a smile. "Make some friends."

Your child ran to the village square, where kids were chasing each other and laughing. But something caught their eye — up on the hill overlooking the village, a boy sat alone among a flock of fluffy white sheep. No one was with him.

"Who's that?" your child asked a girl with pigtails.

The girl rolled her eyes. "That's the shepherd boy. Don't bother. He tells lies."

A boy nearby nodded. "He screamed 'Wolf!' once and everyone ran up the hill to save him. There was no wolf. He just laughed at us."

Your child looked back up the hill. The shepherd boy was tossing pebbles into the grass, all by himself. their chest felt heavy. they knew what it was like to sit alone.

So your child climbed the hill.

"Hi," they said. "I'm your child. I'm visiting my grandmother."

The shepherd boy looked up, surprised. "You… want to talk to me?"

"Sure," your child said, sitting down beside him. "Tell me about your sheep."

His whole face lit up. They talked and laughed until the sun turned orange. When your child left, they promised, "I'll come back tomorrow."

The next morning, your child climbed the hill again. The shepherd boy was already grinning when he saw them.

"Watch this," he said with a mischievous look. "It's really funny."

Before your child could say anything, he jumped up and screamed toward the village: "WOLF! WOLF!"

Down below, the baker dropped a tray of bread. The farmer grabbed a pitchfork. People came running up the hill, out of breath and scared.

There was no wolf.

The shepherd boy laughed and looked at your child, waiting for them to laugh too.

But your child didn't laugh.

The townspeople shook their heads. The farmer pointed his finger and said, "That's the last time I come running for you." The baker wiped flour from his hands and muttered, "We're done." They all walked away.

The shepherd boy's smile disappeared. "Why aren't you laughing? It was just a joke."

Your child took a breath. "It wasn't funny," they said gently. "Those people were scared. They dropped everything because they thought you were in danger. And you laughed at them."

The shepherd boy stared at his shoes.

"It's hard to want to play with someone when you're not sure if they're being honest with you," your child said. "Lying — even as a joke — breaks trust. And trust is what friendships are built on."

"Is it too late for them to change how they feel about me?" he whispered.

"No," your child said. "But you have to apologize and then show people you mean it."
